25th May is the 117th Birth anniversary of our National Poet (25 May 1899 – 29 August 1976)
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in the village of Churulia in the Asansol subdivision, Burdwan District on 25 May 1899.
Today (25th May 2016) is the 117th birth anniversary of our Rebel Poet. He was a Bangladeshi poet, writer, Musician and is the national poet of Bangladesh. He is known as Nazrul. For Nazrul’s activism for political and social justice earned him the title of the “Rebel Poet”. Born into a Bengali Muslim family, Nazrul received religious education and as a young man worked as a muezzin at a local mosque. He learned about poetry, drama, and literature while working with the rural theatrical group. His writings was inspired the Bengalis during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
Nazrul’s writings explore themes such as love, freedom, and revolution; he opposed all bigotry, including religious and gender-based.
Throughout his career, Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote short stories, novels, and essays etc. Nazrul wrote and composed music for his nearly 4,000 songs is in Bangla.
In 1942 at the age of 43 he began suffering from an unknown disease, losing his voice and memory. He died on 29 August 1976.
